Methods to save on oil and fuel

Where savings on cost and environmental pollution from using earth oil cannot be brought about by using alternative fuels, methods should be adopted to effect cutting down on oil consumption. Examples:

1. Vehicles can be made to run more economically.
2. Homes can be designed to need less lighting, cooling and heating.
3. More economic lighting systems should be adopted like:

   Jade Mountain is currently working on a project with the World Bank to use LED's in lighting systems for Africa. Our design includes a 1.5 watt LED light, a small 1.65 watt PV module and a 4 amp battery, all for a very affordable price. Over two billion people in the world don't have access to electricity and are therefore limited to more archaic forms of energy. Solar power can remedy this situation. Specifically, this new system will provide affordable reading light in even the most remote areas.
   
   The bright yellow LED fixture in this system provides plenty of light but only uses 1.5 watts, which is roughly equivalent to a 25 watt incandescent bulb. One hour of sun with this 1.65 watt solar module will provide one hour of light from the LED. Rated life is 100,000 hours - 68 years if you use it only 4 hours per day! Great for rooms with a TV or radio because they don't generate RFI.
